At Pershing Park Elementary School in Killeen Wednesday, families register their children for the start of the upcoming school year. Registration continues Thursday across Killeen ISD, signaling the upcoming beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, which begins for students Aug. 26.

Across the Killeen Independent School District, the sights and sounds of a new school year are in the air.

With the end of July and the start of August, schools began welcoming families Wednesday for new student registration.

Several school leaders said the registration process was steady the first day.

Families will continue to register students from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at their child’s school.

To register, parents and guardians need to have current proof of residency, certified birth certificate, immunization records and previous school records.

The first day of school for students is Aug. 26.

As families register for school, some students are already preparing for fall sports and fine arts performances.

High school summer band camp opened, with the four high school marching bands and dance teams beginning work on this year’s halftime shows and the annual Spirit Spectacular performance set for 8 p.m. Aug. 24 at Leo Buckley Stadium.

This year’s 39th annual start-of-school band showcase serves as culmination to the summer band camps and is a fundraiser for the Ellison High School band boosters. Details will be forthcoming.

Killeen ISD leaders are preparing to welcome more than 400 new teachers and other professional staff members. The annual new teacher induction begins with “District Awareness” set for Tuesday at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.

New teachers and other staff will learn about the school district and community as they begin professional development leading to the start of the school year.

Other campus staff members, including veteran teachers will report back to their schools Aug. 12.

The annual Meet the Teacher open house is scheduled districtwide Aug. 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. at elementary schools and from 5 to 7 p.m. at middle schools.

One school, Maude Moore Wood Elementary School is opening its doors for the first time. Principal Norma Baker said staff members are excited to get started and to welcome students into the new building.

The new school in south Killeen adopted the Warriors as its mascot and its theme for the year is “the heart of a warrior.”

The public is invited to see the new school at its official dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. Aug. 25, the day before the first day of school.
