Vive Les Arts Theatre in Killeen will be opening its new season of the Children’s Theatre with performances of “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” this weekend.

The stage adaptation of the classic holiday animation featuring Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang is “exactly in line with the movie we all know and love,” Director Emma Merlo said.

The VLA Theatre board and creative directors chose the story because of its message of looking past the consumerist nature and materialism of Christmas and understanding the true meaning of the holiday.

The only divergence from the original adaptation and animation are a few more classic Christmas musical numbers incorporated into the production to infuse more of the holiday spirit, Merlo said.

The production features children from the greater Killeen area with performers as young as 5 to 16 years old.

“We had so many incredibly talented children that auditioned,” Merlo said. “The talent level is unbelievable.”

Opening night will be at 7 p.m. Friday with additional performances at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, and Dec. 8-10.

Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for military/seniors/students, and $10 for kids and can be found at www.vlakilleen.org, or by calling the box office from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through Friday at 254-526-9090.
